The 50th National Convention of the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP), alongside its dynamic construction exhibit CONEX 2025, has successfully concluded at the SMX Convention Center, leaving a lasting impression of innovation, collaboration, and a forward-thinking “Borderless” vision for Filipino architecture.

Held from April 7th to 12th, 2025, the event served as a vibrant hub where architects from across the Philippines converged to connect, learn, and shape the future of their profession. The “Borderless” theme resonated throughout the six-day celebration, inspiring attendees to embrace technological advancements, foster international partnerships, and adapt to the ever-evolving global landscape.

A Rich Program of Learning and Inspiration from Global Leaders

UAP NATCON delivered a compelling program of professional development, featuring insightful workshops, engaging seminars, and keynote speeches from a distinguished lineup of local and international architectural luminaries.

Day 1 explored the theme “The Impact of Nature on Nation Building,” with a keynote address by Manuel Cervantes, moderated by Dan Lichauco. Esteemed speakers included Daniel Oh, Nathaniel “Dinky” Von Einsiedel, Jose “Jerry” Acuzar, William Ti, Frederico Ramos, and Sylvester Wong.

Day 2 focused on “The Future of Architecture: Empowering Through Education,” featuring a keynote by Natalie Mossin, moderated by Junar Tablan and Jocelyn Lutap. The panel included insightful contributions from Heru Wibowo Poerbo, Mourad Amer, Johannes Widodom Lam Khee, and Chona Ponce.

Day 3 centered on “Borderless: Breaking down barriers, fostering inclusivity, embracing a global perspective,”with a keynote address by Richard Wood and Riken Yamamoto (2024 Pritzker Architecture Prize Laureate) as the Guest of Honor. The session was moderated by Buck Richnold Sia.

Day 4 delved into “Synergy in Design: The Power of Collaboration,” with a keynote by Dongmin Shim, moderated by Bong Recio. The panel featured the expertise of Christine Sicangco, Jed Yabut, and Emmanuel Punsalan.

Day 5 explored “From Blueprint to Reality: Modern Approaches in Design and Construction,” with a keynote by Magdaline Yeo, moderated by AJ Javier. The diverse panel of speakers included Dino Delotavo, Alexander Eriksson Furunes, Sudarshan Khadka, Jed Michael De Guzman, Gloryrose Dy Metilla, and Monish Siripurapu.

Day 6 will feature the “Emerging Architects Forum,” with a keynote by Denny Setiawan, moderated by Melvin HJ Tan. The forum will showcase the perspectives of Kevin Hui, Melvin Keng, Tan Szue Hann, Chana Sumpalung, and Michelle Barretto.

These daily sessions provided a platform for in-depth discussions on critical industry topics, fostering a deeper understanding of architecture’s role in nation-building, the adoption of modern design and construction techniques, the importance of collaborative practices, and the evolving business landscape of architecture.

Celebrating Excellence and Welcoming New Professionals

Beyond the educational sessions, UAP NATCON also serves as a platform to honor outstanding contributions to the field through prestigious awards like the LIKHA Award. The convention also celebrates the dedication of long-serving members with EMERITUS medallions and welcomes the next generation of architects through solemn oath-taking ceremonies for new UAP members.

Creating legacy for the future with Archinext

Adding to the vibrant atmosphere of CONEX 2025 was the highly anticipated Archinext HCG Young Designer’s Competition, which celebrated the innovative spirit of emerging designers. 

This year’s grand prize was awarded to the group of John Francis D. Mendoza, Trix Angel B. Pelayo, and Margoth Kimberly M. Ramos from Don Honorio Ventura State University with their worked titled Alwina, which employed the design process of biomimicry inspired by the resilience of mangroves and bird wings.

This was followed by Rainier Manuel D. Baldecasa from Bataan Peninsula State University secured second place with “Banaag,” while the collaborative team of Shane Anghelika A. Ocampo, Jose Ivor H. Delos Reyes, and Rick Andrie R. Mirabueno from the University of Santo Tomas earned third place for their project, “The Fourfold Green.” These winning entries highlighted fresh perspectives and creative solutions, adding an inspiring dimension to the overall CONEX experience.

“Borderless” Realized: Embracing a Global and Innovative Future

The “Borderless” theme permeated the entire event, with discussions consistently highlighting the imperative for Filipino architects to be innovative, adaptable, and globally connected in today’s interconnected world. The importance of embracing technology, engaging in international collaborations, designing adaptable spaces, prioritizing community engagement and social impact, and committing to continuous learning resonated strongly throughout the convention.

CONEX: A Showcase of Innovation and Technology

Complementing the enriching convention program is CONEX, the annual construction exhibit. This integral part of UAP NATCON showcases the latest technologies, cutting-edge materials, and innovative designs in the building industry. Architects and industry professionals have the opportunity to explore firsthand the tools and resources that will shape the future of their practice.

Beyond the formal sessions and exhibits, UAP NATCON fostered a strong sense of community and collaboration. Attendees took advantage of architectural tours to significant landmarks and engaged in valuable networking opportunities during social events, forging connections and sharing inspiration that will undoubtedly extend beyond the convention itself.
